Location Settings

Paralino offers flexible location settings that allow you to balance location accuracy, update frequency, and battery consumption. These settings are organized into three main sections based on different usage scenarios:

1. When in Use - Settings for when you or group members are actively viewing the map
2. When in Background - Settings for when the app is running in the background
3. Battery Saver - Settings that activate when your device’s battery is low

By configuring these settings, you can customize how Paralino behaves in different situations to match your preferences for battery life and location accuracy.

When in Use#

The High Performance mode activates automatically when you or one of your group members are looking at the map while location sharing is enabled. This mode provides the most accurate and frequent location updates.

Allowed Duration#

You can choose how long your device can operate in high performance mode within a moving 1-hour window:

After you’ve used the high performance mode for the duration specified in your settings, Paralino will automatically switch to the “When in Background” mode with Balanced settings. This helps preserve battery life while still providing location updates.

For example, if you set the allowed duration to “Medium” and your background update frequency to “Balanced,” the app will provide high-accuracy updates for up to 30 minutes when you or a group member is viewing the map, then automatically switch to the balanced update frequency to conserve battery.

When in Background#

These settings control how Paralino behaves when the app is inactive (in the background) and your battery is at least 30% charged. The app will automatically switch to high performance mode if you or a group member opens the map view.

Additional Background Settings#

Paralino offers several additional options to fine-tune background location behavior:

High Accuracy Location#

When enabled, Paralino will use precise, high-accuracy location sensors (GPS) even when idle in the background. This provides more accurate location data but uses more battery power.

Auto-pause Location Updates (iOS only)#

When enabled, this setting allows the system to automatically pause location updates and put the app to sleep to save battery. The system will wake the app when a significant location update is needed. This feature is only available on iOS devices.

Show Location Indicator (iOS only)#

When enabled, your device will display a location indicator whenever Paralino has access to location data. The indicator remains visible even if no location updates are occurring, serving as a notice that the app is still active and may access location data. This feature is only available on iOS devices since Android always shows location indicator by default.

Battery Saver#

Battery Saver settings control how Paralino behaves when your device’s battery is low and the app is inactive. When you or a group member views the map, the app will switch to a limited high performance mode that balances accuracy with battery conservation.

Update Frequency#

Choose your preferred balance between battery life and location update frequency when battery is low:

Use System Battery Saver#

When enabled, Paralino’s battery saver mode will automatically activate whenever your device’s system battery saver (low power mode) is turned on, regardless of your device’s current battery level. For example, if your device has 90% battery but you manually turn on your system’s battery saver mode (Low Power mode), Paralino will immediately switch to battery saver settings to help conserve power.

Premium Settings#

Paralino premium subscribers have access to enhanced location settings that provide better performance and more frequent updates. These premium settings help you maintain more accurate location sharing with minimal impact on battery life.

Premium High Performance Options#

Premium subscribers can access the Long high performance duration option, which allows:

• Up to 30–40 minutes of high performance mode within a 1-hour window
• Battery Impact: Medium

Premium Background Options#

Premium subscribers can access these enhanced background update frequencies:

• Better Performance: Frequent location updates with small minimum distance between updates
• Best Performance: Fast location updates with no limit on distance between updates

Premium Battery Saver Options#

Premium subscribers can access the Better Performance battery saver option, which provides:

• Regular location updates even when battery is low
• Medium minimum distance between updates
• Battery Impact: Acceptable

Recommended Settings#

For most users, we recommend the following settings:

• When in Use: Medium (15-30 minutes)
• When in Background: Balanced
• Battery Saver: Balanced

These settings provide a good balance between location accuracy and battery life for typical usage patterns. Power users who need more frequent updates may prefer the “Better Performance” or “Best Performance” options, while users concerned about battery life should consider the “Better Battery” or “Best Battery” options.
